Giant Peacock Bass
Tucunaré

Considered one of the best species for sport fishing, the Peacock Bass is a species of scales with an elongated and thin body.

With a large head and protruding jaw, adults can reach more than 3 feet in length and weigh 28 pounds!

The largest Peacock Bass in the world are here in the Itapará River, on the banks of our Inn. The river is ideal for sport fishing, with waters filled with the magnificent Giant Peacock Bass! Come fight and catch this giant trophy!

Speckled Peacock Bass
Tucunaré Paca

"Tucunaré Paca" is a popular term among fishermen to describe peacock basses that have a darker color and are full of lighter spots. Contrary to what many people think, it is not a species, but rather a sexual maturity phase in some Cichla species!

It is quite common to find Speckled Peacock Bass in the Itapará region. A curious fact is that, after the reproduction season of these fish, they return to the paca phase to camouflage themselves in the river banks and flooded areas of forests and vegetation.

Butterfly Peacock Bass
Tucunaré Borboleta

The Butterfly Peacock Bass has a characteristic round spot on its tail, which mainly serves to confuse and ward off predators.

It also has three ocelli, eye-shaped spots, which are well defined on the body, and a different color: it can have a golden yellow or greenish yellow tone.

As for its size and weight, the fish can reach around 2 feet and more than 8 pounds. It is a beautiful specimen that any fisherman can be proud of!

Pirarara
Pirarara

The Pirarara is a large leather fish. An adult can reach 5 feet in length and weigh more than 110 pounds! One of the main characteristics of the species is its enormous head.

The Pirarara is one of the most beautiful fish in the Amazon region, with a brown back, yellowish sides, white belly and orange dorsal and caudal fins and, in some specimens, reddish.

Now you know how to identify a Pirarara when you catch one!

Pirarucu
Pirarucu

The Pirarucu is one of the largest freshwater fish on the planet. Because it is large, its length as an adult usually varies from 6.5 to 9.8 feet, and its weight ranges from 220 to 440 pounds.

Here at Itapará you can have the experience of fishing one of these giants!

It's a strong fish, ready for a good fight with its fisherman, and you'll certainly experience emotions as big as the Pirarucu's size! Shall we fight? We are waiting for you at Itapará Inn.

5 days of fishing in Itapará

Live 5 days of fishing with experienced guides and appropriate boats. With more than 100 lakes to explore, you will be able to practice sport fishing, and contemplate one of the Amazon’s most beautiful places.

In the region of the Itapará River, the sport fishing season begins at the end of September (end of the rainy season), when the waters recede from the igapós (flooded forest) to the natural bed of the river (gutter), extending until the end of March.

With the end of the rains, what was once a single large body of water gradually form small lakes and ponds, accessed by narrow channels. These are the best places to fish.

In the fishing season, the Peacock Basses gather in shoals and attack everything that comes across their path.

It’s a marvelous and unique spectacle! And, as our guests frequently say, it will be probably one of the best experiences of your life.

Amazon's Fauna and Flora

Birds

The Great Blue Heron is one of the most exotic birds that can be found in our forests, measuring up to 2ft and normally having a beautiful black crown with white plumes.

It is a beautiful animal to observe and one of the wonders that nature offers us.

You may also spot swallows! Its beauty and delicacy are unparalleled. They are small, measuring around 5.1 inches, and hunt insects in the air, in mid-flight.

Alligators

Jacaré-açu, or black caiman, is alligator species that is only found in South America, and is most common in the Amazon.

It is a predator at the top of the food chain and the largest adults can eat any animal in the region, such as jaguars, boa constrictors and anacondas – however, they normally feed on small to medium-sized animals.

When you go fishing in the beautiful waters of Itapará, be careful with this animal – keep your distance and respect those in its natural habitat.

Jaguars

The largest feline and predator in the Americas, the Jaguar is one of the great wonders of the Amazon and Pantanal. An animal of large size and immense beauty – it's part of the mythologies of many people, such as the Mayans, Aztecs and Guaraní.

Abroad, this animal is known as Jaguar. Here in Brazil, it's known as Onça-Pintada. Regardless of the name, its characteristics and fur are unmistakable.

Monkeys

When you go fishing, pause and look up at the treetops – someone might be looking back at you!

In our forest you can find several species of monkeys, especially the Spider Monkey. Hanging from branches with their prehensile tail, they rarely descend to the ground.

Eating fruits at the top of the trees, these little monkeys are beautiful animals to keep you “company” during your sport fishing, and make the atmosphere even more pleasant.

Tourism
in Manaus

Manaus, the isolated Amazon capital, is the gateway to the largest rainforest in the world.

Anyone who goes to Manaus falls in love with its exuberant nature! Tourism in the city has grown, and its infrastructure has developed in recent years due to the increasing flow of visitors.

Among the various types of tourism, academic (to study the Brazilian fauna and flora), relaxation, adventure, and ecological (aimed at contemplating and preserving nature) stand out. Whatever is yours, the city will surely win you over.

Oh, and we can’t fail to mention gastronomy, can we? Amazonian cuisine is the one that most conserved its indigenous origins and had little external influence. Rich in fish, seafood, fruit and flour, it is considered the most exotic in the country. Worth a try.

Tour this wonderful region!
